Job Description 

We Are Hiring! The Putney School Summer Arts is looking for a Residential Life Teacher.

The Putney School Summer Arts is seeking a Residential Life Teacher for the 2026 summer season. This role is ideal for early-career professionals or recent graduates looking to grow in education with a focus on art and life skills. The program runs from June 17, 2026, to July 26, 2026.

Program Overview

  • Context: The program is an international residential summer program for 14–17 year olds who are highly motivated to participate in a rigorous arts program.

  • Role Summary: The candidate will work with 200+ teens as they learn, make art & music, and explore their individuality in a safe and welcoming environment.

  • Team: This role presents an exciting collaborative opportunity to work with The Putney School’s Summer Programs team on the Vermont campus.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Mentorship & Supervision:

    • Exhibiting the behavior of a positive mentor and role model as a responsible member of the Summer Arts community.

    • Supervising students during various times of the day (afternoons, weekends, off-campus trips) and keeping attendance.

    • Addressing student concerns and engaging with students to resolve misunderstandings of expectations.

  • Residential Curriculum:

    • Following and teaching the residential curriculum.

    • Leading assigned students through cleaning duties in dorms and teaching various residential skills.

    • Living in the dorms with students and creating a positive dorm culture.

  • Activities & Workshops:

    • Preparing and teaching an Evening Arts workshop to a group of up to 8 students.

    • Leading students in various afternoon activities such as team sports, basic cooking skills, or quiet art activities.

    • Participating in community-wide activities on and off campus.

  • Safety & Administration:

    • Filling out incident reports in a timely manner to inform the summer office team.

    • Being familiar with and reinforcing all Putney Summer Programs policies and practices.

Qualifications

Candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum Requirements:

    • High School Diploma or higher.

    • Must be 21 years of age or above.

    • Eligibility to work in the United States (US citizenship, Resident Alien card, or valid work permit).

    • Must pass a criminal background check and a sexual offender registry check.

  • Preferred Skills:

    • Willingness to support and value all aspects of the teen Summer Arts environment.

    • Valid driver’s license.

    • Prior experience with a summer program or working with teens.

    • First Aid Certification.

    • Experience in AV tech/event management, Photography, or Gallery coordination.

Physical Requirements & Conditions

  • Manual Labor: The job includes manual labor such as regular dorm cleaning, moving furniture, and lifting supplies.

  • Activities: Expect to lead afternoon activities like hiking or team sports and lead an overnight camping trip.

  • Environment: Expect long work days with changing schedules.

  • Policy: There is a strict policy of no smoking, vaping, alcohol, or drugs for the duration of the program.

  • Technology: No internet-ready devices (including smart watches) are allowed outside of the assigned dorm room.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $750/week (with additional compensation for returning staff based on years worked).

  • Housing: Provided (single or shared room in assigned dorm); staff must live on campus from June 17 to July 26.

  • Meals: Free meals are provided, with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options available.

  • Benefits: This position is not eligible for standard benefits.
